The Worst Patient…

feeling-sick

I do believe (without a shadow of a doubt) that I’m the worst patient to live with… my pain threshold is zilch, my moods pin-ball, I frequently relish in sympathy sobs and I have zero tolerance for agitating coughs, wheezes & sneezes. So now that I’m dosed with the horrid winter lurgies for a second time in four weeks my mood has hit rock bottom as I mope around in pj’s, slipper socks and my polka dot dressing gown with it’s pockets stuffed full of grotty Kleenex tissues – such an elegant vision eh?

This week has been a drag to say the least. I’ve moped, moaned, groaned and indulged myself in the occasional sympathy sob during those moments I’ve felt disgracefully sorry for myself. Monday night was the worst as my joints ached and burned as I lay in bed groaning the entire night, yes – even in my sleep! Unfortunately my poor hubby woke up the following morning feeling more exhausted than I did as he confessed to listening to my audible wails of pain only a few inches away from him from midnight to morning. Somehow I doubt I’d have been so forgiving…

Thankfully though as each day passes I’m beginning to get a teeny tiny bit better – even if I am still floating around like a domestic little thunder cloud. However in the midst of all this germ infested chaos I’ve learnt a few valuable life lessons…

Vitamin Expectations Vs Reality:

Having religiously stuck to consuming my chewy vitamin C pastels on a daily basis for the last 3 months, I must admit I was slighted disgruntled when the first bout of lurgies hit let alone the second. ‘How could they fail me? I’ve took them every bloody day!’ I whined to Steve as he softly reminded me they’re not a preventative to these beastly bugs. On the bright side, I guess it would be a whole lot harder fighting the winter nasties without them *grumble*

Never Google your symptoms:

According to more than one website I should be lying in my local funeral parlour by now. Taking to the internet to research aches and pains is reeeeeally not a good move for the bravest of souls, let alone the anxiety prone!

Don’t attempt to create a culinary masterpiece:

Yesterday evening I took a bizarre notion for Chicken in White Wine Sauce… thinking I was up to making it for the clan I took to rolling up my dressing gown sleeves and rattling about the kitchen in preparation to rustle up a tasty dinner for us all. Less than half way through prepping the ingredients my complexion had turned 50 Shades of green as my intestines performed somersaults at the mere sight food. Hoping that it was just a passing bout of nausea I prevailed… of course by the time I set the plates down I managed to nibble on half a button mushroom. Epic fail.

In fact, don’t bother cooking at all:

Ice lollies are a much better option. Enough said.

Never underestimate the power of a good Disney movie:

I may have sounded like a vintage tractor but at least 90 minutes of The Aristocats summonsed enough joy for me to exercise my vocal chords during ‘Everybody wants to be a cat’. I may be 32 but you’re never too old for Disney film right?

pink heart

Wishing you all the very best of health blog buddies *Sniff*

Merry Christmas… see you all soon!

Happy Christmas

Hello my little Christmas baubles…

Christmas Eve has finally arrived and I can’t even begin to describe how super excited I am (not just at the thought of what goodies Santa might leave below the tree) but because over the next few days’ I’m so completely blessed to be able to spend time with a few of my most nearest and dearest family members *woo hoo*

I may have mentioned in a previous post that tomorrow’s going to be a wildly busy day for the Rees household as we’re cooking Christmas dinner for nine rumbling tummies! Now while some would groan at the idea I must admit to being a bit of a ‘Monica’ and secretly love a bustling house filled with cheery faces that are undoubtedly going to get even cheerier as the day progresses *someone hide the cork-screw please*
To be honest the only one concern I have is how the heck I’m going to single handedly lift our rather huge turkey in and out of the oven… you’d be forgiven to think I’d bought a small Emu judging by the sheer size of it!

However the one thing I always look forward to the most is everyone gathered around the dining table, not just because of the yummy feast I’ve toiled over for the last 24 hours but simply being in a room filled with so much love. It really hits home the reason for the season & just how grateful I am to have these amazing people in my life.
Sure the gifts are exciting, the cards are cute and the turkey dinner is mega tasty but being in the presence of loved ones is by far the best pressie of all… don’t you agree?

So whatever table you’ll be perched around tomorrow wearing those goofy paper hats and telling horrendously bad cracker jokes – just take your time to savour the moment, the memories and everything else in between. There are so many others who want for nothing more than to be in our place.

Wishing you all an amazing day & hope Santa brings everything you hoped for 🙂

Merry Christmas Chums…

Ps: I’m taking a little well earned bloggers break over the next few days but I’ll be back on Friday as usual! See you all soon x

My Christmas Eve Essentials…

Christmas eve essentials

There’s always something different about the atmosphere come Christmas Eve, it’s that electrical charge of excitement that leaves us full to the brim of holiday hype and hope. I love it! Yet in the midst of all the extra energy I seem to hit a point where I need to slow down and savour the moment. So to help relax and get my festive feelings in order here’s a few of the little treats and essentials I look forward too on one of the most magical nights of the year…

Pamper Hamper

Whilst everyone else is busy with last minute wrapping and preparations I find it the perfect opportunity to catch my breath for an hour after a busy few weeks preparing for Santa’s visit, not to mention the wave of jolly relatives that will descend upon me for plates full of turkey and stuffing the following day. Taking that little breather the night before helps to recharge my batteries and leaves me feeling refreshed, relaxed and ready to party!
This gorgeous set from Soap & Glory has everything a girl needs to look and smell delicious, including: Clean On Me shower gel, Heel Genius foot cream, Hand Food hand cream, The Scrub Of Your Life body scrub, The Righteous Butter body butter, Glad Hair Day shampoo & a super smoothing Body Polisher! Best of all it comes in a cute bag and is a catch at only £18 from Boots. Check it out online or get yourself down to your nearest store pronto ladies!

Festive Tunes

Of course whilst I’m plucking & preening myself it’s essential I have something festive to keep my spirits well and truly in the Christmas mood. However this isn’t a time for screaming Wizards or festive floor fillers, this is a time for chilled out merriment… and who else’s yummy crooning vocals could woo me better than Mr Buble’s Christmas album of course!
If you haven’t got your little Christmas mitts on a copy where have you been? He’s well worth the investment especially if you’re a fan of those timeless Christmas classics sung by the likes of Bing Crosby & co. It’s full of gooey goodness that makes my heart melt *sighhhh + grin*

Pyjamas

I’m almost thinking it’s a mandatory requirement that everyone should be slipping into a fresh new pair of cosy pj’s on Christmas Eve! There is no better feeling after your little pamper session than snuggling up in a cosy pair of cute pyjamas and toasty slipper socks! I found this cute pair of robin pj’s on TJ Hughes website for only £9.99, what do you think? Personally I’m in love with them!

Christmas movies

I could literally pick a dozen of my favourites and still not be done, however seeing as our little girl is always tickled with Elf I’ll have to recommend it on Emma’s behalf! Honestly, this fun Christmas film has adults & kids tee-heeing with laughter at the awesome Will Ferral who plays an Elf trying to make his way in the big city… if you haven’t watched it make it top of your movie play list!
However there is one other sentimental addition I simply have to mention… Santa Claus the Movie. Yep it’s an oldie but as a kid this was the ultimate Christmas flick my sister and I watched every year before totting off to bed and hoping that we’d been good enough all year to justify a visit from Santa. It brings back a flood of amazing memories that make me smile so much.

Candles

Most of you know only too well that I have a slight obsession for candles any time of the year but when it’s Christmas and all those gorgeous cinnamon scents hit our high street I’m in a festive frenzy loading my shopping basket full of yummy yuletide wafts… and this weekend is no exception as I’ll be taking a trip to my local Yankee Candle store to pick up a their amazing Christmas Eve candle *swoon* Have you smelt it yet? It is divine! What better way is there to create an authentic scent-sational ambience?

Hot Chocolate

I don’t believe it’s officially Christmas Eve in the Rees household unless you’re holding a huge cup of hot chocolate with marsh mallows and whipped cream on top. Okay, so it’s not going to do the waistline any favours but who blooming gives a toot?  Tis the season to relish in a few extra treats including popcorn, gingerbread men and yummy bowls of little savoury tasties. You can tell what the New Years Resolution’s going to be this year again right? *rolls eyes*

Ps: Pop a little peppermint candy in your hot chocolate to give it a mild minty taste… it’s too yum for words!

The Stockings

Finally as the night draws to an end and you prepare to tuck yourself into bed, don’t forget to hang your stocking & leave out a few extra treats… after all it’s been a busy season for Santa & his elves, running around department stores searching for your favourite MAC lippies & must have eye shadow palettes (well, fingers crossed eh girls?)

Holly

What’s your favourite thing about Christmas Eve? As always I love a good chatter so do say hi & leave your jolly thoughts in the comments below!

Create the perfect sultry look for your night out with this delicious array of 12 bronze, eye-bedazzling shades. Check it out for yourself  right here at Feel Unique

The Nibbles

This time of year restaurants are often alive with corporate parties & family get-togethers, so even though your favourite little haunt may seem like a pretty safe choice it’s best to call and pre-book well before your big night out… simply to avoid a two hour wait in a chilly winter queue just to get your bum on a seat.

As most work parties tend to book hotels and traditional restaurants for their Christmas dins, it could be a good idea to branch out and try Cantonese, Indian or Italian food as there’s less chance they’ll be hiving with half drunken CEO’s… and of course so you don’t end up tired of Turkey before Santa’s even had a chance to pack his sleigh! Alternatively, if you’re keeping a watchful eye on the purse strings why not opt for dinner at home or a cheeky take away delivered to your door before hitting the town; this is always a good option for those who take multiple hours to get ready! *whistles innocently*

The Drinks

If like me you’re a hopeless case for a hangover, my advice would be to line that tummy with dinner before popping your corks so there’s something to help soak up the potential effects. Without sounding like an ageing party-pooper;  mixing a multitude of shots may seem like a barrel of fun, but keep in mind it’s more than likely going to end in a rather painful duvet-day the following morning. Who hasn’t seen the Sunday social media news-feeds filled with tales of woe and promises of never to so much as sniff a cork again?! My point exactly 😉

If you’re on the look out for something light and refreshing I’d personally suggest these yummy little fruity spritzer style drinks (pictured above) called West Coast Coolers. Here in N. Ireland they’re incredibly popular, my favourite has to be the Original, however the Rose is amazing too. So if you’re looking for a light seasonal tipple to sip, I’d highly recommend you give these a go. Just remember to enjoy responsibly!

The Entertainment

Organising a night out takes a fair amount of planning – especially if there’s quite a few of you in tow. As much as I love dancing the night away, sometimes it’s fun to do something a little different; and come the festive season there’s just so much choice on offer. A few unique and fun ideas could be to catch a theatre show or musical, better still why not embrace your inner kiddie and opt for a pantomime instead? They’re full of cheesy Christmas cheer to get the giggles going, leaving the serious chatter for cocktails and dinner at a swanky venue afterwards. Alternatively if you’re feeling brave enough to embrace the cold winter weather then why not opt for some late night shopping at a local Christmas market? It’s the perfect opportunity to pick up some really unique little gifts and stocking fillers!

Don't Forget

It’s one of the busiest seasons of the year, so if transport is top of your priority list make sure you book your taxi’s well in advance to avoid being stranded at your door step. Same applies for eating out too!
Keep wrapped up warm with a stylishly snug scarf & hat set to avoid being landed with any winter colds or sniffles if you’re out & about. Do keep a tight hold of your hand bag or purse wherever you go… a bustling night on the town is a pick-pockets dream particularly if you’re planning some late night shopping or Christmas fairs with chums.

Try to carry as little cash as possible, make sure your abode is well secured before leaving for the evening and keep any pricey items such as laptops etc tucked well out of sight! Of course last but not least have fun, enjoy your night out & don’t forget the reason for the season guys 😉

Do you have any up-coming fun nights out planned? What’s your top tip when organising an evening out on the town with friends? Or are you more of a cosy night-in kinda gal? As always I love reading your thoughts and feedback in the comments below…

Cheerio chums!

My 5 Top Tips for Awesome Autumn Skin Care…

Autumn Skin Care

Hello lovelies…

Can you believe it’s the start to yet another week? Is it just me or is time whizzing by absurdly, right before our very eyes? Anyhoo, I don’t know about you guys but I’ve noticed a few changes in my skin this weather (good & bad) Firstly, I’m sure you’ll all sleep better tonight knowing my nightly skin care routine is still going strong… if you missed it first time round click here for the update. To be fair, for a gal who really doesn’t like kerfuffle and has always taken the easy/effortless option to removing make-up via baby wipes, I’m really surprised I’ve stuck to the routine and ever more shocked to admit I actually look forward to it every night! *gasp*

However lately I’ve noticed that our wonderful winter weather is coming in thick and fast… slowly fading are the bright sunny mornings that fill the room with sunlight & warmth and instead I find myself peering out at rain drops, tumbling leaves and muggy grey skies.

Living right on the coast line of the Irish sea, it brings no surprise that my lips and skin are beginning to feel the pinch of all this seasonal shift. So with that in mind, I’ve had no alternative but to up my game and make a few minor changes that could really help my skin survive the cold winter months ahead… I’m shivering already!

1) Eliminate Junk in the Trunk: I’ll be the first to admit I’m far too fond of over indulging in sugary and fatty foods that aren’t doing my skin (or waistline) any favours whatsoever. So rather than topping up my trolley with sticky treats, I’m loading my fridge and cupboards with hoards of lush green veg & fresh fruit including blueberries, strawberries and plums which are high in antioxidants. Go me eh? *cheeky wink*

2) Vital Vitamins: A friend recently introduced me to the Tesco Effervescent Vitamins and I have to admit since using them this past month I’ve noticed my skin looking and feeling remarkably better than it’s been before… no surprise really considering that Vitamin C helps boost the body’s own production of collagen, a protein that helps maintain healthier skin. And of course as we all know, Vitamin C is an amazing antioxidant that helps boost the immune system – pretty much vital when it comes to fighting those nasty winter bugs. If like me you’re a tad forgetful, I’d personally recommend keeping a little box of Vitamin C pastilles in your handbag which you’re more likely to spot on a daily basis than if they were tucked behind a pickle jar in the kitchen cupboard!

3) Drink & be Merry: As weird as it may seem, I actually really struggle with drinking water regardless of how fancy it’s presented or how much I’m told it works wonders for clearer looking skin. For me, the taste (quite simply) isn’t nice at all and so in the past I’ve tended to stick with my beloved sugary fizzy drinks *tut tut* However, I’m well aware these aren’t exactly the most healthy of liquids to be guzzling regularly so recently I’ve invested in a nice big bottle of diluting Ribena (again rich in vitamin C) to flavour the taste of water and cut down on my carbonated nasties. I know, it’s not perfect but it’s a step in the right direction. Every little helps, right?

4) Marinade in Moisturiser: Like I said my pale Irish complexion doesn’t bode well this time of year (or any other for that matter *sigh*) and so I’ve made a pact to keep myself as supple as possible. Virtually every room has a little tube of moisturising lotion hidden somewhere, so I can always keep my face and hands feeling hydrated. I’m also prone to getting a really dry nose & lips when out walking along the beach, so I tend to keep a little chap-stick in my coat pocket that I lightly dab over my nostrils for protection (sounds bizarre but I promise it works) to avoid my nose from looking red, flaky & dry… also really good if you’re loaded with the cold and constantly honking into tissues!

5) Under wraps: For all those lovely long autumnal woodland walks or early morning commutes at a freezing cold bus stop (gee I’m so grateful for my car) it’s vital to keep wrapped up as much as possible. Hat, scarf, gloves – the whole heap. Honestly, your skin will love you for it! I’ve recently dug out my little owl woolly hat & matching gloves and am thinking I could be doing with a cute new scarf to complete the look… if that isn’t the perfect excuse to go accessory shopping ladies then I don’t know what is! *he-he*

So there you have it, my personal five steps to keeping skin looking and feeling loved this autumn. If you have any cold-weather skin care tips to share I’d love to read them in the comments below…  cheerio chums 🙂
