Why It’s OKAY To Take A Blogging Break…

taking-a-blogging-break

A few months ago, the thought of taking a short break from blogging left me riddled with guilt. For over two years I’ve poured my heart and soul into rolling up my sleeves to scribe (what I hope are) engaging blog posts, edit creatively styled photographs & have spent countless hours banging an impatient fist on my desk at the painstaking task of video editing – trust me my poor hand has came off so much worse than my videos usually did *sigh*

However a few weeks ago I was faced with the dilemma of either taking a short-term blogging break or running myself into some sort form of breakdown… considering I’ve already more grey hairs than I can shake a Garnier bottle at I decided on an extended blog holiday instead! So I slipped myself into the background to get a whole host of things tied up, rearranged, planned and not to mention the ongoing health battles that are forever a pain in my existence. Little did I know I was slowly but surely burning myself out… in fact, it TOOK a blogging break for me to realise just how much I pressure I was putting on myself without even realising it.

As much as I initially wandered the floors with a cloud of guilt looming over my head, after a few days I loosened up and slowly began to busy myself with all the things that have been cluttering up my to do list. One thing I will say, is that although I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my blogging break I have reeeeeally missed my online community of blog buddies. It’s great to be back but for anyone who’s currently mulling over the prospect of a blogging break here’s a few reasons why you shouldn’t hold back or let guilt deny you a virtual jolly hol…

.

1) Time to simmer your creative juices.

Regardless of how much of a super-human blogger you may seem, just like any mere mortal we’re not pre-programmed with an abundant flow of creativity. Writers block and running out of steam can end up making your blog lack it’s orignal sparkle. So if you feel you’re losing your mojo then it’s time to step away for the keyboard until you’re ready to bedazzle your audience once again!

.

2) Get some life order.

Like a bazillion other bloggers out there I can’t just spend my days glued to the laptop screen conjuring up my next batch of posts – as much as I’d want to of course! I’m a mum, a wife, I have family commitments, my health etc etc. We ALL have ‘stuff’ outside of the virtual realms – a vacay really helps to focus on getting that other ‘stuff’ done without the pangs of guilt from not hitting the ‘publish’ button. It also enabled ME to see the busiest external areas in my life and work my blogging around my other commitments.

.

3) Helps reassess your blog path.

Hmm, this sounds a little deep, however, it’s true. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been really assessing where I want to go with my blog and what I want to do with it. Right now I’m in the throws of organising a mass of stuff for Liquid Glamour, planning for college refresher courses next year, as well as testing a variety of new products I’ve been sent. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE blogging but I feel it needs to reflect & tie in with exactly where I am in life at the moment. People change, evolve, move on etc. I adore Confetti & Curves dearly but my blogging break helped me consider important things like rebranding and how to move forward with content that’s a little more relevant to my present circumstances.

.

4) Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Just because you step away from your blog for a while doesn’t mean you stop thinking about it all together, in fact, for me, it had the completely opposite effect. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to wondering if indeed it was getting any views, comments or if it had just disappeared into the blogosphere with a stat count emptier that a chocolate advent calendar on boxing day. I’ve built such great friendships throughout my blogging journey – it’s amazing just how much you miss the community and what a great feel it is stepping back into the arena from a short break. There’s nothing that warms the heart more that the ‘Welcome Back!!’ messages when logging on for a chat – it’s food for the soul!

.

5) YOU time.

It’s so easy to forget the one thing that makes a blog the thriving little corner of the internet that it is – YOU. You take a break from school, work and even just a holiday from life in general so why not the same for your blog? Blogging can be bizarrely addictive but if we’re not careful it’s easy to get sucked into a routine of churning out post-after-post. A break from blogging & social media can be just as refreshing as a holiday itself and can really help you evaluate if the amount of effort you’re pouring into your blog works with your lifestyle. Thankfully for me, blogging is simply a hobby – it’s not a means of income or a full time job. However, IF that was the case my uniform would probably be a pair of pj’s and slipper socks… now there’s a life goal to aim for hehe 😉

  1. You should never feel bad for taking time out and having a break! Like you say there’s so much going on in our lives whether it be work, family or something else. I’m sure you know we’re all here for you when you return ❤ I am actually kind of on a blogging break myself, I’m posting but not three posts a week, almost a whenever I feel like it schedule and I’m strangely enjoying it lol x

    • Thanks so much for those lovely words Chanelle, I know you’re absolutely right as it’s exactly what I would say to anyone else but isn’t it bizarre how the pangs of guilt still hang overhead?! lol Of course I know huni, and this in itself is a classic example – logging in to see everyones lovely comments is the best feeling & I’ve missed it so much!! Glad to hear you’re taking a little break too – I think we all need time to relax a little, it can become exhausting trying to stick to routines, and for me this is a really busy time so I might have to join you with the ‘random’ blogging for a while lol Best of all you’re still enjoying it, as am I ❤ hehe xxx

    • Awwwh Ems, it’s SO good to see your wee comment pop up – please be assured huni I will get round to sending you a few lines, at the moment I’m just chasing my tail at a snails pace lol Glad to hear you’re taking things a little slower and prioritising – it’s one of those things that you can’t avoid when meeting other dead lines and Uni work takes a heck of a chunk out of anyones schedule! However, are you enjoying the course and getting on well with it? Please try not to feel guilty with your break – I know how you feel but rest assured everyone will be there when you return & that is a GREAT feeling. Love my wee blogging family ❤ XXX

    • Good to read I’m not alone with my thoughts and feelings on this hun! It really does get under the skin the first number of days but it feels great to get a breather without pushing the limits of publishing posts under pressure! Hope you’re enjoying your blogging break too & thank you so much for the kind welcome back message. It’s great to get chatting with everyone again 🙂 XXXX

  2. I totally get what you mean about some sense of blogger guilt when all of a sudden you stop posting like you used, I’ve been there. But a blogging break was one of the best things for me just to get some perspective and actually get some ideas down and have the space to make them something I’m proud of as opposed to just writing it because I need a a break. I now try to take them semi regularly just so I don’t burn out completely and have some kind of breakdown – which has happened once or twice…and there is a part of me that enjoys taking time away from blogging now, the guilt is gone. Great to see you back hon xx

    • Absolutely spot on Sophie – couldn’t agree with you more hun. It really does pull on the guilt strings but (like you) it was the best thing I could do at the time – I really needed the space for a few weeks and to get things done & catch my breath in the process. Definitely all about finding that happy balance of life versus blogging 😀 Thanks so much for stopping by, great to chat and hope you’re keeping well ❤ XXXXX

    • Absolutely huni, I agree – it was exactly what I needed for my sanity, health and blog. Space to breathe and build up my creativity again – once I got over the guilt I actually really enjoyed the break. Good to be back and chatting with you all again – such a super supportive bunch. Thank you lovely ❤ XXXXX

  3. I totally agree. I only started blogging since May. But I had some issues going on in my life and I decided to take a step back. It just didn’t feel right to force myself writing something if my heart was not in it. I now finally took some time for myself, and like you said, you need it for the creative juice to flow again. Welcome back and happy writing!

    • Hey Sarah, thanks so much indeed for the lovely message huni, much appreciated!!! One thing this break has shown me is exactly what you’ve mentioned – how important it is not to push myself. Finding that working balance of blogging & life is crucial – I love my hobby but I need to learn to not let the guilt take over and enjoy a break when necessary 🙂 Thanks again huni for such a supportive message *hugs* Great to be back ❤ XXXX

  4. I 100% know how you feel. I could say that it’s just because of the maternity leave, but really I’ve been slacking on posts all of 2016. It’s gotta be fun! If it’s not, then there is no point doing it. I’m glad you got to take a good break though 😀

    • Kaily you said it huni, once the sparkle goes you just can’t force it to return… best thing I done was take a break and not try and force the creativity as otherwise I’d just be churning out words… though I am pretty good at churning out nonsense so it mightn’t have been any different lol Hope you’re enjoying life as a new mama again – burning question everyone tends to ask…. is it really just as easy with two? 🙂 Hope you’re well lovely lady XXXX

      • Awe, thanks! I hope you are well too! It’s easier adjusting to have a baby with your second cause you know what to expect. But otherwise it is harder. Now I have two boys to feed, two boys to keep clean, and two boys to wake up with in the middle of the night. I’m definitely MUCH more tired but also much more blessed 🙂

      • Yes I can imagine it being a heck of alot more draining, particularly with them so young but absolutely worth it two have such gorgeous little boys in your life. I think their cuteness would over-ride the exhaustion…. sometimes hehe XXXX

  5. Oh man, I completely understand, Karen!! Everyone deserves some me-time. Such a well-deserved break! You’ve brought us such creative content, it’s only fair!! On that note.. this may not seem too thrilling to you (because it’s a nomination). I’ve missed you and your posts! And I obviously love your blog and find it super inspiring, so I nominated you for the Real Neat Blog Award! It’d be great if you’d visit me to check it out! Although I’d completely understand if you didn’t answer my questions. I hope you’re having a good break, though!

Christmas and New Year has been so incredibly busy for me which is why I haven’t got on much but I hope to put a change to all that once the little one goes back to school and I’ve a few more free hours – it never stops here lol Thank you SO much for the nomination, can’t wait to check it out *huge hugs* XXXXX

      • It’s completely understandable!! I’ve been busy as well especially with exams coming up and all. I’ve literally done zero for my blog and feel awful! But I honestly don’t have the time to blog except for check my notifications and reply to comments here and there 🙈
        You’re most welcome!! 😄xx

      • Oh gosh you poor thing – exams in the new year, how rotten! Hope they go as well as possible for you! Oh gosh don’t be feeling awful at all huni, life gets crazy but at the end of the day we’re all here when you’re ready to post 🙂 I’ve been the same as you lately, though my dodgy laptop isn’t helping – time for an upgrade me thinks lol XXXX

      • Yeahh! My exams are always throughout of Jan 😦 Thank you!!
Yeahh that’s true! But I just feel like I’ve completely neglected it although I really don’t mean to! Oh no! What’s wrong with your laptop? And if an upgrade is needed then maybe you deserve it!!! 🙂 XXX

        Liked by 1 person

      • Awwh I’m sorry to hear that huni, it’s such a drag when you have so much going on that you feel totally pulled away from your blog. I guess one comfort is when the exams are over you’ll have a little more time! One idea could be that you pop up a post telling your subscribers that you’ll be switching to Instagram updates for a number of weeks, at least it’s much quicker to post a piccie and keep up with everyone that way 😉 could be a good alternative to make you feel like your not losing out – just a suggestion though! Oh my laptop is just getting old 😦 It’s about 4 years going on 90 lol Very slow and not liking big programs such as video editing etc. But I’m holding out for a gorgeous new computer sometime later in the year… just hoping it struggles on until I can afford one lol!! Yes, I’m thinking I deserve it too hehe 😉 XXX

      • That’s a really good idea!! I still quite regularly post on instagram because well, like you said, it’s a lot easier! And not to mention quicker!!
Hahaha whoaa! Best of luck with holding on to your senile laptop hahahah I can’t even imagine your frustration with video editing!! XXX 😘

        Liked by 1 person

      • Well I’m glad you think so hehe Hopefully it’ll work for you when you need a blogging break… just don’t forget to put a little post up redirecting any new subscribers to your instagram so they can keep up with you there too 😉 Ahh the senile laptop is still struggling – I’ve just given up and admitted that I’ll have more grey hairs than brunette by the time I can afford a new one lol XXXX

      • I actually did get a post up a few days ago! I finally finished editing a vlog (from Christmas eve, oops) and thought I’d add the update there! So thanks for the tip! 😀
Hahah ohh man! Well, you know what I was thinking of the other day? If only I had grey hair so I could colour my hair whichever colour I wanted without having to bleach it! lol!! I have intense dark hair that doesn’t budge. It’s just in my genes, I guess. (both my parents are Indian – hence I’ve got all the characteristics that come with it, haha!)

    • Galit, honestly pet between your own health and your mum’s health, this year you have done superbly well on the blog!!! I think we put ourselves under too much pressure sometimes, and that feeling of guilt is awful! But hey, it’s a new year and hopefully we’ll get posting a whole lot more – if not, well there’ll be good reason for the break! lol Sending hugs huni 🙂 ❤ XXXXX

  7. This was so refreshing to see! I had followed your blog back in the day (about 2 years ago) when I also had my first WordPress. It’s so nice to see someone else acknowledge the need for a break, and all of the positives! Glad to see your blog is doing so well 🙂 I just re-launched mine (self-hosting now), and feeling refreshed and ready to go. Can’t wait to see all the new types of content from your site!
