Keeping Up With Karen…

Keeping Up With Karen

Regardless how organised I am, every year it never ceases to amaze me how I always tend to find myself composing an exhaustive list a few weeks before the big day – even when I have myself CONVINCED beyond reason that everything is sorted. Have we a hidden stash of various batteries for Emma’s toys? What about crackers for the table? Oh and don’t forget a table cloth – has to be gold, gold’s the theme this year!! *chews on lip for fear of missing something else* Ahhhh, that’s it… DISPOSABLE NIBBLE TRAYS!!!

Yesterday I closed the laptop spent the entire day avoiding all thoughts of what’s on my to do list but instead made pizzas & watched Jurassic World with Ems & Steve. It was glorious. Not a string of tinsel or toy advert in sight. I can’t help thinking that at times the pressure we place on ourselves at Christmas is so overbearing it can zap the fun straight out of it. Forget the endless TV ad’s highlighting the latest 48″ Star Wars action figure or Beach House Barbie… just sitting around watching a whole load of dinosaurs causing carnage whilst nibbling on a Hawaiian thin crust with the family is a nice break from the constant reminders of an endless to do list. Don’t get me wrong I’m all for celebrating the festivities, but occasionally it can be a little too easy to forget the reason for the season. Stress less, enjoy more & be grateful for what we’ve already got, right? ❤

So for those of you who aren’t rushing around a shopping mall today but deciding to take a weekend off from the mayhem of planning etc. Here’s a quick recap of what fun shenanigans have been featuring on Confetti & Curves this past week.

Disclaimer: lots of sparkle & cheesy seasonal references ahead, you have been warned!!!

Planning The Perfect Girls Night Out…

Planning A Girls Night Out

Tis the season… to stumble home at 1 am with blisters on your feet from dancing the night away, draped in tacky tinsel and wearing a giant pair of flashing antlers. Sound familiar? Oh yes, the festivities have indeed arrived which can only mean it’s time to don your sparkliest of outfits & unleash your inner diva for a night on the town.

So whether it’s the cheesy office Christmas bash or a night out celebrating the jolly hols with your closest gal pals, I’ve whipped up a nifty little run through of a few of my night-out essentials to ensure you haven’t missed a trick this party season…

Party1

Christmas Attire

1. What an eyecatcher… this stunning black & gold bodycon dress by Little Mistress has the best of both world. A simplistic LBD coupled with a glamorous gold appliqué and mesh neckline! Available up to size 26 from EVANS – £68.

2. When I spotted this sassy little clutch bag from Accessorize for £29 I knew it would have to go on my Christmas party attire menu. I’m in love with the coloured bands – undoubtedly a wardrobe staple that could compliment almost any party outfit, any season! I love it *swoooon*

3. Baby it’s cold outside… so get your sparkly New Look gold boot shoes on. Warm, sassy & full of festive cheer, at £24.99 these pocket friendly little beauties could be yours to dance the night away in this Christmas & New Year. Aren’t they amazing?

4. Considering the neckline is strikingly detailed I opted for these Champagne crystal drop earrings from Mikey London as an ever so elegant finishing touch. Better still they were retailing for £21 but are now reduced to mere £14 from Debenhams!!

5. Retailing at £14.99 this beautiful light gold paisley pashmina from Scarf Room is the perfect accessory for dressing up my black woollen winter jacket when braving the cold winter air. Isn’t it glorious? I’m in love!

.

Party2

The Make Up Menu Feeling Festive

Of course every night out on the town requires a sprinking of super-glam make-up! In Mondays post I recreated my favourite make-up menu of the season by opting for glitzy gold’s and a classic red lip courtesy of MAC’s iconic Ruby Woo. If you fancy checking it out for yourself just *click here* to visit the blog post or alternatively you can watch all the action by feasting your eyes upon my video tutorial by *clicking here*

.

Party3

dinner

This time of year restaurants are often alive with corporate parties & family get-togethers, so even though your favourite little haunt may seem like a pretty safe choice it’s best to call and pre-book well before your big night out… simply to avoid a two hour wait in a chilly winter queue just to get your bum on a seat.

As most work parties tend to book hotels and traditional restaurants for their Christmas dins, it could be a good idea to branch out and try Cantonese, Indian or Italian food as there’s less chance they’ll be hiving with half drunken CEO’s… and of course so you don’t end up tired of Turkey before Santa’s even had a chance to pack his sleigh! Alternatively, if you’re keeping a watchful eye on the purse strings why not opt for dinner at home or a cheeky take away delivered to your door before hitting the town; this is always a good option for those who take multiple hours to get ready! *whistles innocently*

.

Party4

ladies drinks

If like me you’re a hopeless case for a hangover, my advice would be to line that tummy with dinner before popping your corks so there’s something to help soak up the potential effects. Without sounding like an ageing party-pooper;  mixing a multitude of shots may seem like a barrel of fun, but keep in mind it’s more than likely going to end in a rather painful duvet-day the following morning. Who hasn’t seen the Sunday social media news-feeds filled with tales of woe and promises of never to so much as sniff a cork again?! My point exactly 😉

If you’re on the look out for something light and refreshing I’d personally suggest sticking to yummy little fruity spritzer style drinks. Just remember to enjoy it responsibly!

.

Party5

ent

Organising a night out takes a fair amount of planning – especially if there’s quite a few of you in tow. As much as I love dancing the night away, sometimes it’s fun to do something a little different; and come the festive season there’s just so much choice on offer. A few unique and fun ideas could be to catch a theatre show or musical, better still why not embrace your inner kiddie and opt for a pantomime instead? They’re full of cheesy Christmas cheer to get the giggles going, leaving the serious chatter for cocktails and dinner at a swanky venue afterwards. Alternatively if you’re feeling brave enough to embrace the cold winter weather then why not opt for some late night shopping at a local Christmas market? It’s the perfect opportunity to pick up some really unique little gifts and stocking fillers!

.

Party6

It’s one of the busiest seasons of the year, so if transport is top of your priority list make sure you book your taxi’s well in advance to avoid being stranded at your door step. Same applies for eating out too! Do keep a tight hold of your hand bag or purse wherever you go… a bustling night on the town is a pick-pockets dream particularly if you’re planning some late night shopping or Christmas fairs with chums. Try to carry as little cash as possible, make sure your abode is well secured before leaving for the evening & keep any pricey items such as laptops etc tucked well out of sight! Of course last but not least have fun, enjoy your night out & don’t forget the reason for the season guys 😉

Sparkling Ruby Red Nails…

Beautiful Star Electric Hair Straightening Brush 1

As most of you know I’m a bit of a magpie when it comes to nail polish. For me there is nothing more eye catching than a sprinkle of sparkle to dress up those digits. So seeing as the festive party season is upon is I couldn’t resist the thought of opting for a sparkly red nail to compliment my seasonal mood…

The Base

Max Factor Nailfinity Red Passion

My first choice is this glorious ‘Red Passion’ by Max Factor Nailfinity collection. Considering that I don’t usually wear red regularly this baby bottle is the ideal size. It may be compact but what it lacks in volume it surely makes up for in colour oomf. A glossy ruby red That’s incredibly eye catching!

Max Factor Nailfinity Red Passion Review

Unlike a few other red shades I’ve tried in the past it’s not too watery or streaky to apply, and although the brush is small in comparison to others it’s actually a blessing for those with more petite nail beds… I often find the larger applicator brushes quite clumsy when it comes to painting the pinkies. At £5.99 it may not be the best value for money in terms of size but it’s certainly a great formula that holds a glossy shine considerably longer than many of it’s rivals.

The Top Coat

NYC Crystal Couture Ruby Queen
To give my nails the ultimate Christmassy feel I finished off the look by adding a gorgeous sparkly top coat of NYC Crystal Couture Ruby Queen. This immediately caught my eye on the shelf as firstly it’s more of a micro glitter as opposed to huge sparkly chunks – which I personally find a nightmare to remove! Just a few strokes of this and it totally transforms a classic red into a dazzling party look. At £2 it’s a steal, and although it’s the perfect fashion accessory for Christmas I’m pretty certain it will continue to get plenty of use well into the new year!

The finished look

Red Christmas Nails

Think Wizard of Oz/Dorothy/Ruby Slippers *swoon* Isn’t it gorgeous? If a fierce glamorous red makes your heart pitter-patter then I guarantee you’ll love this dazzling duo just as much as I do!

Has everyone survived the Black Friday carnage without injury? I hope y’all came home armed with bundles of bargains, as for me I opted to avoid the high street mayhem this year by preparing to convert the abode into somewhat of a mini winter-wonderland. DIY Cute Snow Owl Christmas Decorations…

Cute Snow Owl Christmas Decoration Crafts

As promised, I previously mentioned I’d be rolling up my sleeves and causing havoc with plundering through my abandoned craft drawers. However as the ‘season to be jolly’ is closing in (and many of us are preparing to embark on the perilous journey into the attic to dust off our Christmas trees) what better way to kick start the shenanigans than with an easy peasy festive craft? As most of you already know my love for anything owl related runs pretty deep, so this seemed the perfect project to get started. Fancy giving it a go too? Then’s here how…

.

DIY Snow Owl Craft Tutorial

Craft Glue

Sparkly sheets of craft card

Loo or Kitchen rolls

Paint palette or Paper Plate

Paint brush

Sharp scissors

DIY Snow Owl Craft Tutorial Collage

Fold over each half of the tops of your toilet roll tubes until they’re closed & resembling the shape of an owls head. Next it’s time to load up your paint brush with a dose of white paint and get smothering your loo or kitchen rolls. I used regular white craft paint as it dries quick & is super affordable from pretty much any super market or craft supply store. You’ll probably need a few coats to make sure there’s no patches or uneven coverage.

Ps: metallics paints such as rose gold or silver also look incredible too!

.

chsno04

DIY Snow Owl Craft Tutorial Collage 27

Whilst you’re helplessly waiting on your painted loo rolls drying, it’s time to get crafty with your card. Using a penny & two pence piece as a guide (or whatever alternatives in your own currency) draw at least 7-10 circles using the smaller coin on the back of the card. Next draw another 2 circles with the larger coin for the eyes. Lastly you’ll need to draw 2 wings – an elongated tear shape is super simple to draw. Using a sharp pair of craft scissors cut out your shapes and set them to one side.

Repeat this step for every owl you’ll be making!

.

chsno05

DIY Snow Owl Craft Tutorial Collage 3

Once the body of your owls are touch dry it’s time to break out the craft glue and start gluing on the extra details. PVA craft glue is ideal for this as it’s strong, easy to work with, dries clear & very quickly. I find it easier to pour a little onto a paper plate & use a cotton bud to apply to the back of the shapes.

Start off by gluing the two larger circles near the top of the body for eyes. Next add the smaller circles to resemble chest detail. I started with the top row and overlayed them working down… 3 rows are more than enough for this. Lastly glue on the wings by ensuring the wider part of the tear drop is the part you stick to the sides of the body.

.

chsno06

DIY Snow Owl Craft Tutorial Collage 4

Finally it’s time to finish the face details.  For the eyes you can use buttons, googly eyes (that can be bought from most craft stores_ or opt for simple little cut outs like myself & Em’s did. Using a piece of black foam (or card) cut out another two circles using the smaller coins as a guide & stick them in the centre of the larger sparkly circles. To add a fun little pupil cut out two tiny white circles and glue them onto the black circles. A hole-punch is ideal for these if you have one to hand!

To create the owl’s beak all you’ll need is a teeny triangle of orange coloured card. Carefully stick it underneath the owls eyes and you’re good to go!

.

Voila! Your DIY Owls are now complete! Why not add some string so you can hang them from the tree or you could create a little owl mobile? Our little sparkly owl family will be perched along a window sill until the tree goes up next weekend!! *woo hoo* 😀

10 Tips for Surviving The Christmas Shopping Trip….

10 Top Tips On How To Survive The Christmas Shopping Trip

Christmas. There, I said it!

I’ve been tiptoeing around the subject for a few weeks now, especially seeing as every year it seems to be thrust upon us earlier and earlier. However as I’m one of these uber organised folk that’s ready with the shopping list the moment Halloween is behind us.

This time of year seems to flick a switch in even the most forgiving of shopper. I’m personally not a fan of risking my life for the latest Disney doll or £10 off a light up toaster… all whilst news crews circle in a chopper above the parking lot reporting on the injury count. Yet every year we brave the hoards of high street shoppers in search of that perfect pressie as we prepare to get trodden on, elbowed and bled dry of our monthly earnings.

Thankfully if you’re on top of your game it really doesn’t have to be as stressful as rumour has it. In fact if you play your Christmas cards right you might actually find yourself having a jolly good time of it – unlikely I agree, but hey, I’m being optimistic for once!

So for those of you preparing to brave the crowds here’s my 10 top tips on how to turn the festive frenzy into tidings of comfort & joy…

.

cst1

Wandering around aimlessly searching for Christmas gift inspiration can be stressful & tedious. Rather than shopping blindly, curl up with a note pad and jot down everyone you plan on buying for first. Think of their personalities, interests, hobbies etc. and go from there. Alternatively nab a few high street catalogues or pop online and I’ll guarantee your gift buying juices will flow. If you’re still struggling check out Not On The High Street, which is crammed full of unique little gift ideas from some of the UK’s best creative businesses!

.

cst2

Keep in mind that evenings and weekends are peak times for big spenders so it’s no surprise that this comes with a mass of queues & disgruntled shoppers. If possible save yourself the hassle and schedule your trip for an early week morning, whilst others are busy at work or school you’ll be sure to find the space you need to browse the shelves without risking a bruised rib or trampled toe.

.

cst3

Last year I witnessed at least 4 major falls from girls slipping or tripping as a result of tottering around in six inch stilettos. Gear up with your comfiest shoes, a cosy jacket that is light enough to pop in a bag should you begin to wilt and a practical handbag that is easily slung over the shoulder – leaving your hands free to grab those bargains.

.

cst4

It may be the season of goodwill but a high street full of handbags is a winter wonderland for sticky fingered thieves. Don’t be tempted to carry large amounts of cash, keep valuables at home and if you’re leaving bags of shopping in your car make sure they’re stored out of sight. Seems like common sense but it’s amazing how many shoppers just don’t get it – not everyone is as honest as you are!

.

cst5

If you’re pushed for time or prefer an organised approach to shopping why not opt for reservation instead? Many of the major retailers offer a service to collect your gifts in store that have been pre-ordered online… which is perfect for those who are doomed to miss delivery vans or may want to check sizing. This saves a whole lotta time and energy by allowing you to browse peacefully from the comfort of your own sofa/office chair/loo *delete as appropriate*

.

cst6

If the thought of stepping out into the harsh winter weather whilst laden with bags is too much for you to comprehend or you have a work schedule that’s busier than Rudolf’s come Christmas Eve, then sticking to ordering your goodies online is probably the best stress-free solution to your quandary. However to avoid a delivery dilemma why not ask a relative or friend if they would mind your goodies arriving at their abode instead? That way all you have to do is call in and collect on your way home without any worry.

.

cst7

Okay, so it might get a reputation of being a haven for bored housewives but there are actually quite a few nifty little items to be found on the shopping channels these days. Plus anything you see is tirelessly demonstrated, so if your Dad’s scratching his cranium over the new coffee machine you bought him, chances are you’ll probably be able to work it better than any budding Barista – all thanks to the 20 minute sales pitch you endured.

.

cst8

Don’t forget to check out voucher sites such as Wowcher & Groupon as some of the offers are pretty darn impressive compared to the retail value elsewhere. Keep an eye out for high street deals such as ‘three for the price of two’ and check out Money Saving Expert for lots of really useful money saving tips, advice and voucher codes to help keep more pennies in your pocket.

.

cst9

Needless to say when most of us think of Christmas Shopping we immediately think of huge glitzy department stores, personal shoppers and gift wrapping services, when in fact there is a multitude of wonderful little shops and businesses out there that provide an outstanding level of service and selection of goods that can’t be found on the shelves of their corporate counter-parts. By supporting local businesses you’re keeping the essence of your town alive and helping a small business stay trading!

.

cst10

Reminding yourself you’re NOT a machine (or one of Santa’s highly trained little Elves) is easier said than done. Often we hit the high street with a the aim of dashing around getting as much done in as little as time as possible. However, unless you’re one hour from close of business on Christmas eve just sloooow down.

You may think you’re doing yourself a favour rushing around like a bee with a burnt ass but in fact you’re wasting hoards of precious energy, getting flustered & more than likely missing out on all the juicy bargains in the process. Taking a 30 minute break to catch a coffee (and your breath) is imperative to recharging the batteries & getting mentally prepared for the final shopping furlong.

pink heart

Don’t forget: it’s easy to get carried away with all the hype in the run up to shopping for the big day but it’s important for each of us to keep in mind the reason for the season. As stock runs low & tempers flair, remembering the person behind the counter is indeed a human being with feelings is much appreciated in the world of retail. If something does go wrong, often staying calm can yield better results than waving the arms about like a distressed windmill. Keep it cool & you’ll merrily avoid a seasonal meltdown & possibly with the help of a kind hearted sales assitant!

.

If you have any top tips on keeping stress levels under wraps this Christmas or would like to share how you tackle your festive shopping I’d love to read about it in the comments below. As always, thanks so much for stopping by, wishing y’all a fabulous weekend ahead 🙂

With Christmas firmly on the horizon, it’s pretty much time to start saving the funds & concentrating the shopping list on a few festive treats for my nearest & dearest.
