Eye Liner Tips for Beginners…

Eye Liner Tips For Beginners

Are you a nervous wreck at the sight of a liner wand? Does your hand quiver at the mere thought of simply trying to draw a line across your eye lids never mind any of the ‘fancy flicks’ you often dream of perfecting? If you’re a newbie to lining your lids, regardless of age or experience, then why not check out my top tips on eye liner for beginners! And if you’re feeling really creative you can also check out how I Create The Perfect Winged liner in 5 Simple Steps.

But before we go wild with the flick let’s get to grips with the basics 😉 Ready to line those lids gals? Then let’s get started…

With 3 different types of liner to choose from, it’s safe to say that most of us have our secret preferences as to which we prefer eye doodling with! Pencil usually works a treat if you’re aiming for a softer finish and is perfect for those ‘smoked out’ or ‘soft’ every day looks. Gel liner tends to come in a tiny pot and is applied with a liner brush (Real Techiques has a great range of affordable brushes), and although it can be quite drying there’s no denying it often results in a super smooth line. Liquid (my personal favourite) is great for creating beautiful cat flicks and dramatic looks, however be on your guard as it does require a steady hand, patience and fair bit of practice if you’re a first time user.

Although black is considered one of the most popular colours for eye liner, it’s not the be all and end all. You could opt for a warm grey or soft brown to compliment the colour of your eyes or to tone down the finish if you’re aiming for a more wearable everyday look. Don’t forget, if you fancy glamming things up why not try a striking purple or electric blue? It’s amazing how vibrant a coloured liner can transform your eyes – perfect for a girls night out.  Alternative check out some of the glitter liquid liners… these are SUPER easy peasy to apply and a great way to get used to adapting to liquid liner without the need for a majorly steady hand.

When I’m creating a dramatic eye look I love to use little strips of tape that I place against the side corner of each eye. Not only does it keep my shadow looking defined it also gives me a great template and guideline when it comes to lining my eyes…

Scotch Pop Up tape is perfect for this! After all, every little helps to get those lids looking super even and on fleek 😉

Another great tip is to slightly pull the skin surrounding your eye & tip of brow taut. This draws the skin tight creating a smooth surface for you to create a super sharp line!

If you’re planning on lining your eyes with pencil, then it’s generally a good idea to warm the pencil lead first by either cupping it with tissues or rolling it over the back of your hand. It may be a little messy, but it makes such a difference when it comes to application as it glides on so much smoother and it’s less likely to feel uncomfortable or crumbly!

Yet again another tip for pencil lovers… creating a much softer result by using a smudger or small brush to very gently blend your kohl liner out.

Remember to be very gentle so you don’t rub it off completely, but by blending your liner out you’ll get a much softer result that’s perfect for an everyday look or classic smokey eye.

If you’ve opted for gel or liquid, always give your liner time to dry by closing your eyes for a moment and allowing the liquid to set… particularly if you have hooded eyes as quite often the liquid or gel can end up transferring when blinking if it’s not entirely set. Okay, so it may add another minue to your routine but it’s totally worth the risk of not having to retrace your steps by fixing any mistakes!

If you really want to brighten up your eyes and make the colour pop then why not opt for a nude liner? It’s perfect for making tired eyes look so much brighter when you run a nude coloured pencil over your bottom and upper water line.

Rimmel Scandaleyes nude

For this I use Rimmel Scandaleyes pencil. Although it’s also available in white, I feel it’s a little too stark for me whereas the nude just tends to brighten up my entire finished look perfectly!

  1. I can’t manage liquid at all, but I love pencil and gel (currently using Soap&Glory). I find black makes my already dark eyes look like potholes in my face, so I opt for brown and it makes such a difference! I *love* the tape idea – especially for eye shadow and curtailing any fall0ut if it’s an issue. I also use eye shadow as liner if I want something subtle and smokey, so for example I have a palette that frankly the quality is shockingly bad, but I can’t stomach to chuck it so I use it just for liners! Works a treat! Also I love that tip about nudes. I tried white and also found it too much, so I’m going to root out a nude one I have and give it a whirl. Great post as always hun! X

    • Giggling at the pot hole remark huni… totally get you with that one, as one of my chums has the very same issue and always stays well clear of black for that same reason!!
Oh the tape is just amazing… makes everything so much tidier and professional looking 🙂 What a great idea using your dud palette for a liner!! Yes, I found white far too harsh – made my eyes look utterly bizarre! Nude is so much softer, the rimmel scandeleyes is very good though I’m sure there’s a wealth of nude liners out there to try and test!! Thanks sooo much for stopping by huni, such awesome feedback *hugs* XXXXX

      • They do?!!? 😮 I thought they were one of the safe ones 😦 That’s so disappointing to hear as I really do like Rimmel! Honestly, what’s the blooming need for it *sigh* Wish they’d all come to their moral senses and leave the poor animals out of it 😦
Hope the Catrice one works well for you huni, keep me updated on how it goes for you ❤ XXXXX

      • I know 😦 It’s really disappointing, especially when they’re such a huge company, surely they can afford to find an alternative! But I love that you’re conscientious about it and compassionate. If everyone thinks that way, we’ll make massive strides! I’ll keep you posted on Catrice! X

      • Exactly – I just don’t get it!!! If the like of Makeup Geek can be cruelty free why on earth can’t the rest of them – so unnecessary 😦 Trying to be a conscious as I can huni, I have a little beagle boy (Toby) breaks my heart that defenceless animals like him are being tortured for vanity. Awful. Do indeed keep me posted on Catrice, would love to hear about it 🙂 *hugs* XXXX

  2. For me, the Eyeliner is one of the most important tool of my Makeup.
    Without, I’m feeling blank *lol*

But it took some time to get exercise in …
My favorite Eyeliner is the L’Oréal Paris Super Liner Ultra Precision Eyeliner.
Intense color , thin tip and long lasting – the best for me!

    I use Rimmel Liquid Line.
My eyeliner-motto is: “Liquid Liner can smell your fear. Use it with confidence.”

You have gorgeous eyes, by the way!

Approach it with a quivering hand and your eyelid looks like a road map of china… confidence goes a long way for creating an awesome flick on fleek 😉 hehe
Awwwh thank you so much huni, such a lovely compliment!! Hope you’re having a fab weekend ❤ XXXXXX

  4. This post is so perfect for me, I’m actually taking the plunge and purchasing some eye products this weekend. I’m going with a pencil eyeliner as I’m not very advanced in the eyeliner stakes and I’m thinking of going for brown so it will look more natural and if all else fails I can use it to fill in my brows 🙂 have a lovely weekend Karen! xx

    • Oooh yay what awesome timing eh chum?! hehe 😀 That’s great news – pencil is perfect to start off with… just remember to pull your lid tight when applying it otherwise it’s a nightmare (if your lids are anything like mine lol) Brown is lovely as it’s so much softer but can still be built up for a dramatic look when needed! Awesome idea for the brows if it doesn’t workout though – super smart thinking!!! Let me know how you get on 🙂 XXXX

  5. Great post!! Perfect, because you know how you and I have been talking about eyeliner 🙂 you’re right, you don’t have to always stick with the basic black color. You can go outside your comfort zone and try a gray, purple or even a bold blue. Make those eyes pop like Mary Poppins! Friday has arrived!!! Xoxoxo

  6. Up until last year, I never lined my upper lashline. I was awful at it. Then I got the Essence gel liner to try and I haven’t looked back. I’ve tried other liners but I always go back to the Essence one.

    • Isn’t it amazing how some products work personally with you, while others just don’t! I found this with liquid liner – tried all sorts of recommendations that just didn’t work for me… not particularly bad liners, just not for me… I was at the brink of giving up on it entirely until I tried the Rimmel liquid liner and haven’t looked back since 🙂 Always great to find that perfect product!!! XX

  7. Your eyeliner always looks flawless! 🙂 I love black liquid eyeliner but sometimes switch it out for purple or green! 🙂 You use the exact same Scotch tape as me…it’s awesome to perfect that flick. I am totally cracking out the purple eyeliner tomorrow, thanks for the inspiration.x

    • Ahhh thank you Traci-Ann!! 🙂 Strangely enough I’ve been hunting for a purple liquid liner huni – have you any recommendations?! Preferably drugstore?!
Isn’t the scotch tape just awesome?! Great minds think alike chum 😉 hehe

      • I love Urban Decay liquid eyeliner for high end and KIKO for drug store. Both do amazing purple ones. 🙂 I am in the throws of uni work…I have an assignment due Monday…gaaaah! But I have been off work all week (in the library) with full face of makeup on each day with all the things I can’t normally wear for work…so it’s good! Lol! Hope your weekend is going well. 🙂
