In only 5 words describe what readers can expect from your blog:
Fun, Inspiration, Humor, Variety, & Kindness
.
What inspired you to start blogging?
If you ever meet me, I am naturally an extremely chatty, yet relatively distracted kind of person. I almost always have something to say, and I don’t really care when or where I say it. This actually got worse for me whenever I lived in Europe, partially because I was rarely communicating in English (fun fact, I’m fluent in French), and partially because I was in a completely new location that I was so overwhelmed. My blog then developed out of a need to focus, find a way to communicate with myself and others in my native tongue, which is something you do not realize you miss until you cannot use it. And that is how my original blog Fashionista Rachel started while I was living abroad. Once I returned to the States, and I started an Internship with a small startup fashion company (where I gained a lot of my Photoshop skills). I realized that Fashionista Rachel says nothing about who I truly am at all, and I decided to merge that blog with my current blog. Since that time, blogging has become my little side hobby on top of schoolwork, and now work-work (yikes). It’s really just a way for me to keep my mind calm and relax me, which is probably why I have stuck with it for so long.
.
Tell us about your blog name… what made you decide on it?
I was thinking about a name for my blog for probably a good 3 or 4 months before I finally settled on Hey It’s Rach! What actually happened was one day after I left my sister a voicemail she calls me back and asks me why I always start my voicemails by saying “Hey It’s Rach” because my sister clearly knows who she is speaking to, and that was when I decided that had to be my blog title. It was simple, it was fun, and it is something that I already said all the time so incorporating it into my blog and videos is a piece of cake.
.
Do you ever suffer from Blogger’s Block & if so how do you overcome it?
I think everyone suffers from Blogger’s Block at one moment or another. Sometimes its because I am so stressed out that I cannot even think about what post or video I want to make next, sometimes it is because I actually cannot get excited enough to film a video or write a post about something I have been using. What I do in either of these cases is I just start reading other bloggers posts, and talking to the people around me to figure out what I could potentially write about. Honestly, the people I surround myself with inspire most of my ideas.
.
What’s your favourite post to date?
This is honestly such a tough question because every time I learn something new, I am extremely proud of myself, and I feel that I am always improving and learning new things, which is one of many reasons why I started my blog in the first place. But, I think for me, the moment that I was most proud of myself was when I filmed my first ever Haul video, which also happened to be my first video ever. Getting in front of that camera and talking to no one was probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to do because I felt like I was really throwing myself out there. Although I feel like I film things VERY differently now, you can just tell how excited I was to be filming as I am talking a mile a minute, and my voice is extremely high pitched in the video. Watching it now, you can really see how much I have learned over the past year. If you want to watch that video, click here. You will be very amused.
.
Describe your everyday clothes style:
Eclectic, but I love a great Rocker Chic look. Most of my wardrobe is actually black, white & red with a little bit of blue mixed in. If you want to know a typical outfit for me, I generally wear high-waisted jeans (my favourite pair is acid wash), with my black lace-up booties, a plaid shirt with a black tank underneath, or a really cool band tee, paired with a scarf, some gold jewellery, and my black leather jacket, which I will probably wear almost every day in the coming months.
.
What are your current top 3 beauty items?
The NYX Super Skinny Marker is probably the darkest, blackest liquid liner pen that you will EVER wear, and I’m obsessed. Also, The Laura Geller Gelato Swirl Illuminator in Gilded Honey is probably the most gorgeous highlighter I have ever owned it is gold, but not so gold that it makes your face look gold whenever your skin is as fair as mine. Finally, my Urban Decay Matte Lipstick in BlackMail is probably one of the most gorgeous colors I have ever seen. It is extremely dark, almost to that it is black, but when you get close enough you can see that it is a deep purple. The formulation of the lipstick is gorgeous, and it isn’t drying on the lips like many other matte lipsticks. Although I haven’t been able to really wear it much in the summer, I expect to be breaking it out quite a bit this fall.
.
How do you like to relax & unwind after a stressful day?
First, I will make a cup of tea. As I have an entire bin full of tea, it’s difficult to pick just one variety, but one of my favorites is definitely African Solstice by Tea Forte. It has such a relaxing, and unique scent that just smelling it slowly lifts the stress away. Then I will probably make some sort of junk food, like nachos or bagel bites, which are both awful for you. If I’m not feeling the super junky food, I make popcorn. Then I sit and catch up on trashy TV, like the Bachelor, America’s Next Top Model, or Say Yes to the Dress.
.
Describe your ideal Saturday night:
Four words: Netflix, junk food, friends. That is all I need to keep me happy.
.
What do you do to relax?
My favourite way to relax is to take a nice, long shower at the end of the day. I feel like it just melts the stress away, and I find it as a kind of symbol for washing all of the figurative and literal dirt and grime that you have had to deal with throughout the day. Being physically clean has a way of cleaning the mind. It truly is awesome.
.
Everyone has their bad habits, what’s yours?
One of my really bad habits is probably talking too much, mainly out of nervousness. Talking people’s ears off is unfortunately the best way that my brain processes information. Once you get to know me though, you get extremely used to it, and most people just understand it is my way of going through information. I always just tell people that if I’m speaking too much, let me know. If someone points it out, I’m never offended because it is a personality trait that I’m well aware of and am learning how to control. On top of that, I love anything cheesy, and since I am moderately lactose-intolerant, it always ends badly. I still eat the food anyways, but my friends always wonder why I still eat it if it gives me a stomach-ache. I guess I must suffer for something I love.
.
What’s your most cherished childhood memory?
Waking up on Christmas morning at like 5 AM, going into my sister’s room and waking her up, then playing with our toys (only the unwrapped ones) and drinking hot chocolate until we were allowed to wake up our parents at 7 AM. Nowadays, I still wake up at 5 AM, but my sister will not allow me to wake her up until after I wake up Mom and Dad. I guess you could say that even though I’m 22, I’m still a 5 year old at heart!
.
What was your favourite school subject?
This one is easy. I loved choir growing up. I was actually in a choir from 5th grade up through my sophomore year of college. Singing and music have been so much a part of my life that I started theatre just because there was an opportunity to sing, which eventually led to me becoming one of the leads in my high school musical. Choir and theatre actually helped me gain a lot of confidence that have made me the woman I am today.
.
What’s your dream job?
Honestly, this is a tough one since I just graduated college three months ago, and I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up (although I do now have my first real big girl job). All I know is that if the opportunity arose that Hey It’s Rach! and my YouTube channel could become my full-time job, I would say yes in a heartbeat. Not because I want to be in the public eye, as I like anonymity and privacy, but because of what I can do in the public eye. I really want to be able to shape people’s lives in positive ways and be a role model to young people out there. I know many people out there are not nearly as blessed as I am to have such a wonderful and supportive family in my life that if I can share that love and support with someone else who needs it, I would be more than happy to be that person for them. Overall, I just want to make positive change in the world.
.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I hope to continue to be surrounded by the love of my family and friends, as they really are my world and I would be lost without them. I’m not sure where I see myself career wise because for me that isn’t that important. I just hope Hey It’s Rach! is still alive and kicking.
.
What top 5 things are on your bucket list?
Make a positive change in someone else’s life
Return to France and travel all over the country
Meet Ed Sheeran and sing with him (although I might be crying to much to actually sing)
Record a music album
Finally Learn to play the guitar that has been sitting in the corner of my room for years
.
What’s your biggest achievement to date?
Graduating college is hands down my biggest achievement so far. Those four years challenged me so much in not just classwork, but who I was as a person. If I ever met myself on my first day of college (or even a year ago) I probably wouldn’t even recognize myself, as I feel I have changed that much. Not only did I have shifts in who is Rachel, on top of that I was studying, going to 8 AM classes, and passing final exams. How I ever did all of that at the same time and still come out in one piece, I may never know.
.
Who inspires you?
My family. And if I had to pick one person within there who inspired me the most, it is definitely my older sister who is one of the smartest go-getters I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She has always known what she wanted, and she was never afraid to go get it and achieve it with flying colors. I would be an extreme different person without her influence in my life, partially due to the fact that when we were little if she did something, I wanted to do it too, and partially due to the fact that she is just such a strong person.
.
Do you have a favourite inspirational quote?
“When in doubt, dance out.” I have no idea who said it, or if I made it up myself, but I like to live myself by this mantra. You can’t stress yourself out in life, and you have to have fun with life. If you have a bad day, what do you do? You blast your favourite song in your room, and you dance and sing into a hairbrush. When you fall down, you turn it into the worm or some other breakdancing move. There is no point in living life worrying. We have all been put on this planet for a reason, and there is always a greater purpose in life, so if you don’t know what to do, and life hands you lemons, you throw them in the air, and then wave your hands around like you just don’t care.
.
What top tips would you give to someone who is thinking of starting their own blog?
Honestly, just go for it. You have nothing to lose. Whenever I started my blog over a year ago, I never expected to still be doing it today, as I am one of those people that change their mind like I change my clothes. I never expected my blog to be like my favourite pair of yoga pants: I never want to take them off or get rid of them. It is now a staple in my life, and you will eventually find your rhythm with it.
