Behind The Blog… featuring Sophie from Keep Going

Keep Going

Happpppyy Tuesday Y’all

I’m in a sickeningly good mood this morning which doesn’t seem to be as infectious with the rest of my camp mates… it’s very unusual considering that I’m normally the one grumbling around the house trying to prise my eyelids open. Yet when the sun streams in on these early summer mornings I’m literally bounding out of bed ready for another day – it really is true what they say about the weather affecting your moods right? 😉

Keeping on that chirpy note, I have a slightly unique blog buddy to introduce you all too today… it’s the gorgeous Sophie from Keep Going. For those of you writers amongst us you’ll be utterly jumping for joy, however as Sophie is a bit of a cosmetic craver (like the rest of us) she was super eager to get involved in Behind The Blog *yaay* So do take the time to say a huge hello & pop over to her talented little corner of the inter-web, I’m pretty sure you’ll love it as much as I do! Ready to meet the girl Behing The Blog? Then let’s get started…

In only 5 words describe what readers can expect from your blog:

Random thoughts, ramblings and stories.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I actually started this blog as part of Creative Writing Society back in 2012 when I was a second year at uni. I didn’t really use it that much for various reasons, and then last summer I decided to make a proper go of blogging and putting myself out there, especially in terms of my writing and now here we are.

Tell us about your blog name… what made you decide on it?

I am really bad at naming things and I was bored of my original blog title which was from Peter Pan (I think). I ended up just following in the same footsteps as my Tumblr and naming it after part of my favourite quote. And also it was kind of a reminder for myself, because I renamed my blog at a time where I kind of really needed reminding that I needed to Keep Going. (As for my url, well that’s just a version of my name because I created this blog on a whim and needed one and my name was the ONLY thing I could think of, told you, bad at naming things.)

Do you ever suffer from Blogger’s Block & if so how do you overcome it?

Yeah I guess I kinda do. Usually I just comb through my notebook and chuck something up that I have already written and is in a place that I am happy for people to read it. Or I do this thing where I type a whole bunch of words and don’t necessarily make a point, sometimes I find out what my point is as I type. That’s primarily where the ‘ramblings’ tag gets used.

What’s your favourite post to date?

Oh goodness. I have two.

Poison ( has a special place in my heart because I had this idea that would not leave me alone and I knew how I wanted it to go and also I was playing around with a Disney film (because I went down that route rather than the original fairy tale) and I loved that, especially because I felt like I was a better writer than I was when I first played around with a Disney film.

My other is Fears ( because I had no idea where it was going. I saw the prompt and it was floating around in my head and then I sat in Costa one day and wrote the prompt down neatly at the top of the page underneath the date and then it happened. And I was very happy with the way it turned out.

Describe your everyday clothes style:

I used to live in vest tops, jeans, shorts/skirts and then cardigans to keep warm and exclusively flat shoes, primarily Converse (unless it was night out). And I still do that to an extent but I am getting more adventurous these days and playing with prints a bit more and I got really into oversized jumpers this past season and have started to incorporate a lot more boots into my style. Basically I have finally figured out what works for me and makes me feel confident and good while also being comfy and not too much of a pain to sit around in. There is a lot of black in there as well. A lot of black.

What are your current top 3 beauty items?

Soap and Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub – The seasons are changing and the legs are slowly making a comeback to the sun so I was in the market for a really good exfoliator. I read a ton of reviews and needed one that was affordable because I would be using it a lot and therefore need to replace it semi-frequently and I found this one. I love the smell of it and it lingers for a while afterwards in a way that could be horrible is in my opinion quite pleasant (there are days when I use this when I am not alone so my parents might have a differing opinion of the sustained smell!) and it leaves my skin feeling super soft and ready for a slathering in body butter.

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Frizz Remedy – I have temperamental, curly hair that spends most of its time tied up purely because it’s easier. However I swear by Aussie hair care, I have tried countless ranges but in my experience it’s the best. I use this when I have to de-tangle my hair and instead of loading my hair up with mousse or serums and such stuff I stick this onto damp hair and then it makes it all curly and pretty and makes it about 100% less irritating because it is manageable and that is all I need for me to love a product.

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm – I needed a new lip balm because I wanted something with beeswax in it. Then I remembered that this whole range exists. I just use the normal one and I love the smell of peppermint so it’s great and it’s also more long lasting than other things that I have used before, which is great.

How do you like to relax & unwind after a stressful day?

Cook a comfort food dinner and then settle down and watch a film or catch up on a TV show. Maybe do a bit of reading or writing/editing. Music is always useful to, as it is in most areas of my life.

Describe your ideal Saturday night:

Binge watching a TV show, pizza and ice cream wrapped up in my giraffe onesie.

What do you do to relax?

Listen to music, read, write, sleep, eat. Food is apparently key to me and relaxation…

Everyone has their bad habits, what’s yours?

I have so many I feel, but I think my worst is that I pick my spots even though I really know I shouldn’t and it was a massive contributor to my bad skin a few years ago.

What’s your most cherished childhood memory?

So 11 years ago we went on a family holiday to Grenada. Other than it being beautiful and relaxing (and I also got to witness one hell of a rain storm, which at the time terrified me but in hindsight held a certain kind of beauty, that’s the pluviophile in me). It was the first holiday that me and my brother could properly swim on so that was fun because it meant we weren’t so restricted. There was a beach right by the hotel. There were the best pancakes and omelettes ever at breakfast as well as so much other food, it was almost overwhelming to be honest. It was also one of the last family holidays we went on aboard as a family and it is definitely one of my favourites and more and more with each passing day I really want to go back to the Caribbean.

What was your favourite school subject?

Despite the fact that I have a degree in English, my favourite subject for most of my school life was History. I am fascinated by it and loved learning about it (and it helped that I was kinda good at it). But towards the end of Year 12 I fell in love hard with English Literature and when faced with the choice between the two to study for 3 years, it kind of seemed like a no brainer, and I was right. (That was also confirmed further when I did two History modules during my first year at uni and hated them.)

What’s your dream job?

I just want to write. Ideally that would be in author form but I am taking a serious look into the whole journalism route right now.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I am so bad at doing stuff like this because so much can change in 5 years. I have no real plan for it or anything and I am open to opportunity. I will say that I hope I have moved out in the next 5 years.

What top 5 things are on your bucket list?

These are not the top 5 they are just 5. Travel around Italy, travel to some other major European cities, I have just decided as I am typing this that I would quite like to that walk over the 02 thing, watch the whole of The Sopranos and become a better baker.

What’s your biggest achievement to date?

Graduating uni last July, which overtook getting into uni as my biggest achievement.

Who inspires you?

Honestly it’s always been words/song lyrics that inspire me the most and they come from so many people and places. I find new quotes to inspire me every day and some follow me around for longer than other.

Do you have a favourite inspirational quote?

Yes, I heard it in a TV show once a few years ago and it really stuck with me, to the point where my blog title was inspired by it and I wrote a piece based on it a year or so ago and stuck a magnet of it on my wall. It’s from Winston Churchill, ‘if you’re going through hell, keep going.’

What top tips would you give to someone who is thinking of starting their own blog?

A good, clean theme I think is important. Also just write what you want to write. If you care about your content then that usually shines through. And interact with your fellow bloggers.

Tea or Coffee = Coffee every single time

Coke or Pepsi = Honestly, neither.

Messy mayhem or Super Organised = Messy organisation, because there is order in my chaos

Cute kitten or Playful puppy = Playful puppy, give me all the puppies

Night In or Night Out = Night In

Heels or Flats = I couldn’t choose. I am veering towards heels, but not super skyscraper ones. So many of my everyday boots have a 3 or 4 inch heel on them these days though, if you had asked me a year ago I would have said flats without hesitation (I’m sorry this answer is so long)

Lip Stick or Lip Gloss = Lip Stick

Rock Chick or Pop Princess = Rock Chick

Paperback or E-book = Paperback

pink heart

  1. Hi there Sophie! Awesome blog name – love that Churchill quote. I will def be paying a visit!

Karen, the sun is putting me in a ridiculously good mood too…though I have to agree with Kaily, that would certainly not be the case if I were camping! Glad you’re having fun though 😉
