10 Tips To Banish Bloggers Block…

Bloggers Block

One of the most common issues us bloggers face is the dreaded ‘Bloggers Block’ – it can creep up when least expected and before you know it you’re staring gloomily at a blank screen wondering what the fudge to ramble on about next. There’s no denying, it happens to us some stage or other, however being able to overcome it is easier said than done… trust me, I’ve been there and worn the tiresome tee-shirt many times with my first blog.

As much as our minds try to convince us we shall never be able to string another interesting sentence again, trust me when I say it doesn’t last as long as you anticipate. However, how quickly you recover is entirely up to you *sigh* So for anyone out there who’s numbly trying to fill a page with a few interesting words here’s some of my own tips that help me unblock the thought process and get back on the blogging wheel once again…

.

Close The Laptop:

no computer

Glaring into space or being hypnotised by a blank Microsoft Word document is never a quick fix for getting your mindset back into vibrant virtual health. Shut everything down, walk away and give yourself a breather otherwise you’re just simply trying to squeeze out words that refuse to flow naturally. Instead, flick on the kettle, pour yourself a glass of vino, watch a movie, take a nap… anything, yes, anything other than eye-balling your computer screen for hours on end.

 .

Chill Out:

Feet up

If I’m struggling with any aspects of my writing, the one thing I find usually clears my mind quickly is a relaxing dander along the beach. Just getting out of the house for a while blows of the cobwebs and makes me feel so much more relaxed compared to sitting hunched over a keyboard straining to string a sentence together. Realistically it doesn’t matter where you go or what you do, as long as it’s relaxing, distracting and therapeutic you’ll more than likely feel refreshed and ready to go afterwards!

 .

Read Old Posts:

Read old posts

Sometimes we simply tend to lose our own unique voices. I spend as much free time as I can reading other blogs but I always make sure I take a little trip back to read my own before writing my next post… sounds ludicrous? Well actually it’s not as bizarre as you think. Before embedding my posterior into a chair for a good blogging session I need to get back into the mindset of where I left off. Liken the scenario to reading a dozen books at once; often the last thing we read is the last voice in our heads, so check back through your posts – particularly your favourites. They’ll soon inspire you to roll up your sleeves and jump straight in.

 .

Grab A Glossy:

Magazines

For any like minded bloggers I literally cannot recommend you keep a copy of your favourite magazines to hand, whether they be beauty, lifestyle, fashion or your prized copy of Tractors Monthly *ahh hemm* Flicking through some of their top features is ideal for keeping your interest at peak performance and is also an excellent learning tool when it comes to layout and editing. The more professionally created pieces you read chances are the better you’ll become at mastering your own handy work!

 .

Up Close & Personal:

Up Close

Oddly enough some of the most fun posts I’ve written have been personal ones such as documenting a special day, taking piccies of my little work area, date nights, weekends or holidays with friends and family etc. Even more shockingly they’ve also been some of my most successful posts for interaction and stats… which is always an exciting little buzz to see!

Product Reviews are great, Favourites are fantastic, Wishlists are wonderful but sometimes the best way to make an impact on via blogging (and have a whole heap of fun in the process) is taking time to share a little bit about yourself! If you’re anything like me, blog buddy interaction is one of the biggest driving forces to feeling part of an encouraging community.

If throwing yourself in the spotlight seems a little terrifying then why not attempt a fun TAG post? There’s a ridiculous amount of them floating about to get involved in or better still create your own and nominate some of your fellow followers to get on board. The inter-world’s your oyster 😉

 .

A Problem Shared:

Question

Why not take your troublesome tit-bits and share them with the world? In other words ask your blog buddies for their advice or input on something that you might be trying to find a quick fix for? It doesn’t have to be anything deeply personal or profound! It’s a super way to get chatting with others, especially those who may have the perfect solution to your conundrum or indeed share the same issue.

 .

Keep A Notebook:

pink notebook

I’m now at the danger of sounding like a broken record when I stress how super-helpful keeping a little notepad & pen in your handbag at all times really is!. Only a few days ago I was flicking through ancient magazines in my doctors surgery when I spotted a great little article on a topic I thought would be good to blog about in the near future. Rather than make a mental note and run the risk of letting a great idea slip through the net – I  whipped out my trusy note pad and jotted it down! My notebook is now bulging with post ideas that are itching for creation. Another great remedy for banishing bloggers block!

 .

Check Out BlogLovin:

Bloglovin

If you’re a newbie blogger and haven’t yet checked out BlogLovin get yourself over there pronto. It’s packed full of amazing blogs from all platforms such as WordPress, Blogger etc which enables everyone to join together in one happy virtual party. This allows you to follow & read through as many of your favourite blogs as you want, which will most likely stir your musings with a sprinkle of inspiration! All you have to do is note down some fun post ideas in your trusty notebook and put your own unique spin on them! Voila… a great feature hot of the press for the rest of us to feast our eyes upon.

Ps: Don’t forget to mention anyone who’s helped inspired your post or feature, you’ll be surprised at how appreciated it is by other bloggers!

.

Be My Guest:

guest blogger

Another great way to beat bloggers block is by collaborating with others or inviting some of your blog buddies to guest post on your blog. By getting others on-board to share their mullings on like-minded topics is a great way of shaking up some ideas for fresh content. Alternatively why not arrange a fun interview with someone who might be of interest to your audience?  It’s often a super way to inject some new and exciting topics and may even help you meet new bloggers into the bargain! Bit of a win-win wouldn’t you say?

 .

Take A Break:

Suitcase

Often the dreaded bloggers block stems from external factors such as pressures at work/home or even emotional stress that most of us go through from time to time. Blogging should never feel like a chore or hard work, so if you’re not having fun writing your posts it’s pretty safe to say others probably aren’t having fun reading them either.

If you’re struggling to keep up or stay tuned in then it could be time to take a well deserved break until you’re back to feeling on top form. Considering that your blog buddies & regular readers are also human they’ll be more than supportive of your decision and will still be around to give you a cheery welcome on your return, enabling you to fully enjoy your virtual vacation!

    • Thanks so much huni 🙂 Thankfully it’s not been something that has plagued me since starting Confetti & Curves but it did in my previous blog… I think it was a sign I clearly wasn’t gelling with the content! I think I’ve went the opposite now… so many posts so little time lol Hope you have as lovely a weekend as you are 🙂 X

  1. Great tips Karen. I am enjoying browsing through Bloglovin at the moment. So much great stuff out there to read!
And a big thumb up to tagging or crediting fellow bloggers who inspire you too. Just makes everyone feel a little bit better when they get the credit they deserve.
    Have a great weekend!

    • Isn’t it fab?! I really should get onto my BlogLovin alot more than I do at the moment – just so so busy! Yes, I think it really does help to acknowledge others – and I’ve often found that people end up returning the favour which is always a lovely gesture 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by & wishing you a fab weekend too ❤ Xo xo

  2. Great post, Karen. However, sometimes I feel like I’m so lazy with notebook =)) I always forgot it and decided to buy the new one and things repeat the same. But notebook sure is one of the way to keep the ideas there. When I found my notebook somewhere in the house, I couldn’t believe that I used to know these great, creative ideas :)) Notebook does help a lot.

    • Yes, I agree – it can be a task remembering to take it with you and keep using the same one so everything is in the one place! I usually keep mine in my bag at all times and have made a point of getting into a habit of using it… takes a while but it’s worth it in the end huni 😉 thanks for stopping by and for your kind comment lovely XXX

  3. I love this post and really helpful when you feel that bloggers block and how to overcome from that situation. I love to read my past posts and I also do google a lot about the topics I want to read. When I struggle with writing or dont know what to do next I love to check instagram and browse some beauty blogs and photos lol. I feel good after that.

    • Spot on Amanda – sometimes having a head like a motorway in rush hour doesn’t help… in fact it can be equally as frustrating as an empty space!! Yes, a wee break away always helps – I think many bloggers tend to feel a huge pressure to produce something consistently which can drain the fun clean out of it!! Same to yourself huni, hope you’re keeping well 🙂 XXX

  5. Awesome points! I’m finding it hard to find the time to actually sit down and write something and when I do get to my day off I just feel completely blank. Definitely going to go back over my old posts. Sometimes I say I’ll write about something in the future then sort of forget about it. I’m sure there’s a post waiting to be written somewhere! Haha x

    • Been there Becca and it’s so blooming frustrating so I fully sympathise!! Working full time & maintaining a blog is super hard work 😦 I’m blessed to work from home at the mo but it’s still a challenge to keep on top of it sometimes! Yes, do go over some of your older posts to help boost you 🙂 You’re a pro at this blogging malarkey so you’ll be grand 😉 have an awesome weekend lovely Xo xo

      • That would definitely be a good one – I think it would be transferable for students going work at home too, because I could never get on with work at home, I’d always have to go to college to do it!
Thanks, as do I with yours! Xx

  6. Wonderful post and super helpful tips!
Being super stressed about school doesn’t mix well with having a blog, so you could say I’ve had my fair share of ‘blogger’s blocks’.
I sometimes really want to write a post, but it’s like a massive brain fart – I just can’t put the words in place or I can’t think of a topic for the life of me. Besides the lovely tips you provided, I also tend to Google a lot (‘What to do when you have Blogger’s Block?’, ‘Tips on Beating Blogger’s Block’, ‘Blogging Tips for New Bloggers’…)
I love reading other posts for inspiration and I’d probably join Bloglovin’ if it worked. (I tried so many times, but it just doesn’t work – the links they sent me were always broken)

I mostly just shut down my laptop and just leave the Internet until I stop being stressed about it. 🙂

Again, thanks so much for the tips, will definitely be using them when the Block strikes again. 🙂

    xx

    • Thank you so much Dora – much appreciated!!! Oh no poor you 😦 Just goes to show it even hits the best of us 😉 he he loling at your ‘brain fart’ comment – sometimes it can be a real challenge thinking of a topic or post to write about, hence why I keep my glossies to hand for inspiration! I think it’s great to read others peoples point of views – that’s the beauty of blogging, it’s all a personal perspective 🙂 Shame about BlogLovin, why the links are working are beyond me – very bizarre huni!
I think shutting everything down is one of the best ways to deal with bloggers block, most time we just need a break!! Either our minds are blank or too busy! Thanks again so much for stopping by and leaving such awesome feedback – really great reading your point of view on it all! I hope school isn’t stressing you out too much huni *hugs* have a great weekend ❤ Xo xo

  7. Great ideas Karen! I love keeping a notebook and diving into a good glossy mag. I also like what you said about the personal posts–so far I’ve shied away from them myself, but I always love reading other bloggers’ personal posts, so maybe I just need to give it a shot already eh? Have a great weekend, lovely! xo Mil

    • Thanks so much Mil, so glad you find them helpful huni 🙂 you really should give the personal posts a shot, I find readers really enjoy getting to know others that little bit more. It injects a bit of personality into your blog too which keeps it unique 🙂 Good thing is you have Jules so maybe the two of you could do a joint post like a day out shopping together – that way it mightn’t make you feel so shy about giving it a go if there’s two of you 🙂 Hope you take the plunge!! Have a super weekend ❤ xo xo

  9. I agree with closing the laptop and doing something else when you have writers block. It’s what I learned when I was an undergrad as an English major. Taking a break also really helps and keeping a notebook! Thanks for sharing. ❤

I’m sure he will! 😀 And then when he does it will be so exciting for you to climb into your new car. 😀
I think I have two weeks of holiday starting on the first. I will be a swollen little fish the first week of holiday since I am going in to have my wisdom teeth surgically removed but it’s all for the greater good and I am not really stressed about it since the surgeon is the loveliest man. He literally spent an entire hour with me the other day explaining the whole procedure.
You are so welcome! Your hugs are always appreciated too, Karen. 😀 ❤ xxx

  10. Such a great post Karen! So many helpful tips!! 🙂 Sorry I am just now reading your post. I am finally catching up on everyone’s posts lol. I don’t have any advice to offer but I think all of yours sounds good! With having a beauty blog and constantly checking out new products, I haven’t run into that problem thankfully lol. Though I do like to give my mind a break every now and then. It was nice to get away from everything for a couple of days and just enjoy life. 🙂 ❤ Xxxxx

No I haven’t had the dreaded bloggers block (yet) either – it seems beauty/lifestyle blogging is keeping us FIRMLY on our toes lol With my last blog I really did struggle… simply because it was more personal ramblings. Content is such a huge factor too – should’ve really drafted that in somehow *sigh* Yes, a little break is always a good thing – keeps you refreshed! As much as we love blogging, having a few days off always leave me feeling excited to get back into it!! so glad you had a wonderful time – you absolutely deserved every moment of it 🙂 XXXXXX

      • Thank you Karen! It was nice to be away for a little bit. I almost didn’t want to come back to my computer the rest of the weekend. I just have been feeling so tired. But then I thought comments will just keep piling up and I have to answer them all. Glad to hear that you haven’t had a problem with blogger’s block. It seems like there is always something I want to post about lol. I just wish our vacation could have last longer but it was a nice little get away. The rest of the weekend is just for resting now. 🙂 XXXXXXX

Often I find it’s because I’ve had too much on my mind & a good workout or long walk completely de-blocks!!! So glad they’re of use to you 🙂 Thanks as always for being so darn supportive & encouraging ❤ XXX
