The Beginners Night-time Skin Care Routine…

Night time skin care

I must admit, until recently I’ve committed the ultimate sin in skin care… used baby wipes to remove my daily make-up and never gave a second thought to what lotions or potions could help keep my pores looking pristine. At the age of 32 I’m not getting any younger, having said that *thankfully*my face isn’t quite looking like a road map of China just yet, but I have started to get conscious that skin care should really become more of priority than it’s been in the past. Now that autumn is upon us and the colder weather is firmly setting in, I thought it was high time I took hold of my senses and treated my face to a few new products that will hopefully help keep my complexion looking fresh and fabulous, particularly for the harsh winter months ahead.

And so my story begins… Three weeks ago (whilst browsing the shelves of Superdrug) I noticed a special offer on the range of Olay Skin Care products. Being a total virgin to this cleanse/tone/moisturise malarkey I thought it would be a pretty safe place to start. Not really expecting any major skin developments I began my new nightly routine and discovered to my utter amazement how beneficial it was in as little as 48 hours. Not only does my skin feel incredible, it looks so much smoother, younger and my make-up is remaining much fresher throughout the day. My lumpy bumpy pores are now a thing of the past and in their place is a dewy (rather youthful!) complexion.

My only complaint: why haven’t I done this sooner?!

So here’s what I’m using…

Step One: Cleanse using Olay Gentle Foaming Refreshing Face Wash

Cleanse

The smell of this product won me over instantaneously – it was indeed love at first sniff. Having used it now for just under a month, I must admit it leaves my face feeling incredibly clean, soft and not a hint of tightness or irritation. All I do is simply squirt a small amount into my wet hands, massage onto face, rinse off with warm water and pat my skin dry. Easy peasy!

Step Two: Refresh using Olay Gentle Refreshing Toner

Tone

The toner I was quite sceptical off, what could this little bottle do that the face wash doesn’t? Erm, a heck of a lot actually! To use I pour a few drops onto a cotton pad, wipe over my face and gasp in horror at the hidden dirt and grime it manages to draw from my pores. It’s incredible. Just like the face soap it smells beautiful, feels invigorating and leaves my skin silky smooth. I’m a Toner convert.

Step Three: Rehydrate & Moisturise using DermaPure Youth Effects Night Creme

Moisturise

Basic moisturising lotions aren’t something I’ve used regularly in the past, let alone specific hydrating treatments such as night crèmes. However after seeing this little tub of DermaPure Youth Effects Night Creme I decided to give it whizz. Straight after I use my toner I’ll rub this gently onto my skin and leave to work its magic while I sleep – the results being a hydrated face in the morning that feels so soft and healthy. It may be a little over oily for some, but my skin is really enjoying the much needed nourishment. I’ve already used an entire tub and will undoubtedly be replenishing my stocks. Thumbs up for DermaPure!

Considering I’ve went from baby wipes to what feels like a full blown night-time regime, I honestly thought I would tire and slip back to my old habits. However the results have been so obvious that I actually look forward to my three step nocturnal process. Am I being a complete weirdo or is there something oddly satisfying about seeing a grimy cotton pad at the end of it all? Bizarre, I know!

If you haven’t yet got yourself into a regular night time skin care routine I’d highly recommend you do – honestly, you’ll not look back. As handy as wipes may be, they simply don’t do the job properly and end up causing more harm than good. However if like myself, you’re a bit unsure of where to start I’d encourage you to try the Olay range, its simple, smells amazing and the results for me were almost instantaneous… and to top it off at well under £10 for both items it’s an absolute bargain for beautiful skin.

If you have any recommendations or tips for a night-time skin routine please leave them in the comments below, I’d love to read them!

  1. I am the laziest person ever when it comes to skin care! I only use a cleanser and a moisturiser and that’s where my skincare routine ends. I feel like your article might be the start to a journey of me learning to take the time to care for my skin as I should. 🙂

    • Compared to the old me you are leagues ahead Nadine, I was literally a ‘any wipe will do’ kinda gal… which was leaving my skin all red & blotchy. Derma Disaster!! If you discover any new products etc give me a shout – always on the look out for new skin routine tips or recommendations!! 🙂 X

      • I most definitely will! I have a very sensitive skin though so I tend to be a creature of habit when it comes to products I use. I am always terrified to try new things! Even some Clinique products, which are all dermatologically tested, don’t work for my skin and cause breakouts. My skin literally burns with some of their products. One Clinique product I really enjoyed when I had it was their Youth Surge SPF 15 moisturiser. That was amazing! I would definitely recommend that especially if you have a dry skin like I do.I have to admit that I often used baby oil to remove eye make-up. That probably was not the best idea. 😀 xx

      • I’m exactly like that too Nadine – if I find something I love I’ll stick with it & won’t be overly willing to budge in trying something new. Better with the devil you know eh? lol That’s such a shame about your skin, really surprised Clinique hasn’t wholley worked for you but having said that I have ridiculously sensitive skin myself – most products in the past have left it feeling tight and dry hence why I’ve stayed away from investing in facial products for so long. Thanks for the recommendation – great to know when I branch out to try new products, especially for temperamental skin! Baby oil?! Geez, not sure I’d cope too well with that. Maybe time to go shopping for some new eye make-up remover!! lol 😀 X

      • The whole baby oil thing was ages ago before I my mother actually allowed me to wear make-up at all. A friend and I would go out or experiment with make-up and we needed a quick way to remove make-up so my mom would never know about my make-up adventures. 😀 It was quite silly, really. I find my cleanser works really well for removing make-up too if I run out of a proper make-up remover. I am not sure if my cleanser is available overseas. It works wonders though! My skin always feels so much healthier after using it. I am nearly sure it’s proudly South African and I am not sure if the company has gone international with its product sales.I use Epiwash deep cleansing wash for normal and sensitive skin. My dermatologist suggested their products when I was a baby and I have been using their creams and washes ever since although their face washes and exfoliators are products I have started using more recently. This is a link to their website: http://vandykpharma.co.za/en/
Facial products can be really expensive and it’s quite heart breaking to spend a lot of money on something that doesn’t work. I completely understand why you stayed away from them. 🙂 xx

      • Haha Glad to hear you’ve got past your baby oil days… what a hilar story behind it :L Clearly it done the trick, albeit it a sneaky one! lol Haven’t heard of Epiwash, sounds fab particularly if your dermatologist has suggested it from such a young age. Thanks so much for the link – will definitely check it out. So good you’ve found something that works, it’s a minefield out there when it comes to finding the right skin care lotions and potions! 🙂 Xx

      • You’re most welcome 🙂 sometimes I feel like It’s so hard to find good quality skin care products. Your post has inspired me to go searching for some more skin care products. That Dermapure night cream looks good I hope its available in Australia… I swear I feel like Australia is so neglected sometimes haha x

      • Oooh, I’m glad it’s been a source of inspiration 😀 Considering I’m pretty much a newbie when it comes to this I’ve kept it pretty simple though I’m sure there are thousands of amazing lotions and potions that do just as super a job… I guess it’s about finding something that works for us individually. Such a shame about not finding it in Australia, I would’ve thought you’d be tripping over all sorts of creams with the intense weather lol Dermapure *I think* is available on Amazon, it’s not in any way expensive but I find it really moisturising, though a few people (my mum included) has found it a bit too oily – maybe I have utterly dried out pores lol However for the price I’ve definitely say give it a shot and see what you think 🙂 X
